The Computing Services Group supports all faculty and staff in
the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics in The College
with the exception of the following: Writing, Psychology and Language,
Literature and Linguistics, and the unix systems and servers in
Physics. Check the Contact Us page for your computing support person
if you are a member of one of these departments. Student computing
requests, including labs and residence hall computing, should be
directed to CMS (Computing and
Media Services).
Assistance covers almost any issue with your main workstation that
performs work for the University and the College. It includes help
ordering a new computer, upgrading an existing one, installing software
(see our supported list of software
applications), and adding a printer or scanner. We consult and
help you choose an email program that meets your needs, or begin
a web site. We do limited individual training and conduct small
group classes in conjunction with CMS and faculty computing. We
register visiting faculty computers for use on the campus network,
as well as our regular faculty and staff machines. If you have a
computer need we do not cover, we may be able to direct you to a
resource to resolve the problem.
We do not support all operating systems, especially older Windows
systems or those running unix or linux. See our Support
Policy for details. We also reserve the right to limit hardware
support by vendor. The majority of computers in The College are
made by Dell or Apple. We can offer limited assistance on some other
models, at our discretion.
Send an email to notify us of a problem with your computer, request
assistance or ask for information. When you send an email to consult@cas.syr.edu,
the request is available to any one (or all) of our computer consultants.
Someone will read, research and respond to your request, usually
within 24 hours. Realize you may wait a bit longer at certain times
of the year, or when we are implementing system-wide upgrades or
changes.
