The main CAS server is a Novell Netware file server managed by
the Computing Services Group. A server is a central computer that
allows access to software, printing and data. CAS is available to
all faculty and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences. You must
contact the Computing Services Group
to have an account created. Accounts are also available to students
who assist faculty and staff on specific projects.
CAS accounts offer the following:
80mb storage space (increased upon request/availability), backed
up regularly
Ability to share data easily with other CAS clients (including Dean's
office staff)
License for MS Office (Macintosh and Windows versions)
License for McAfee Virusscan for Windows or Virex for Mac
License for Meeting Maker calendaring software (on request/availability)
Filemaker Pro database software (Macintosh and Windows)
Email clients: Netscape Messenger, Eudora, Groupwise
Convenient access to software updates
Other software may be offered through CAS, or may be available
at academic discounts. See our software
information page for details.
Database services:
CAS maintains a Filemaker Pro server for Macintosh and Windows clients.
Web Server:
Space on the College Web server is available to departments and
for special events and projects. Again, you need a CAS account to
access web files. You can request a special name for the web site,
such as english.syr.edu. Our officially supported web editing software
is Macromedia Dreamweaver. Visit our web editor's group home page
at dreamsites.syr.edu.
Client Server Applications:
If you utilize client server applications (Peoplesoft, Brio, etc.)
you need a Novell account such as your CAS account. CSG does not
create or manage SSO accounts, you must go through your department's
information coordinator to set up your access and rights.
